The Pricing Group – Can You Defend Your GP Calculations in an Audit?

Can You Defend Your GP Calculations in an Audit?

For many pharmaceutical manufacturers, Government Pricing (GP) calculations and Medicaid rebates are outsourced to third-party vendors and reviewed internally at a high level. The numbers may reconcile, reports are delivered on time, and everything appears to be in order.

When a government auditor walks in, the standard changes fast. Reports that reconcile and deliverables submitted on time are no longer the measure.

Regulators don’t just ask what your GP results are - they ask why. They expect clear, well-documented explanations of the methodologies, assumptions, data sources, and controls.

In our experience, organizations that have relied on vendor-generated outputs, without fully understanding the process behind them, can struggle to answer those questions at exactly the wrong moment.

Before an audit puts your program to the test, ask yourself these four questions:

  • Can you clearly explain and justify the methodologies driving your GP calculations?

  • Are your assumptions and data inputs consistently applied, documented, and aligned with current guidance?

  • If you rely on a third-party vendor for your Government Pricing calculations, do you have sufficient transparency needed to understand, explain, and defend the results?

  • Can you quickly produce audit-ready documentation that ties every output back to your source data and business rules?

Perhaps the most important question is this: would the individual certifying your GP submissions be comfortable defending every reported value? Because that certification is made under penalty of perjury, confidence must be grounded in more than just trust, it must be supported by transparency, documentation, and a thorough understanding of the calculations behind the results - not simply because a vendor said so.

At The Pricing Group, we partner with manufacturers to bring greater clarity and defensibility to complex GP and rebate processes. Through training, ongoing reviews, or more of advisory-focused support, we help clients move beyond simply receiving numbers. Our goal is simple: it's to ensure you can confidently explain, support, and defend every number you report.

If you're ready to move beyond simply receiving GP results to truly understanding and confidently standing behind them, we'd welcome the opportunity to connect. Contact us
